Filling Powders

Filling equipment considerations for free-flowing and non-free-flowing powders.

Product characteristics

Powders vary widely in bulk density, flowability, dustiness and particle size. Fine powders may aerate, bridge or dust, while granular products often flow freely. Hygroscopic products can cake and change behavior over a production run.

Filling technologies to investigate

Technologies commonly considered include auger filling for many powders, net-weight scale filling where accuracy by weight is required, and cup or volumetric filling for consistent free-flowing granular products. Multihead weighers are often discussed for larger granular pieces. Dust containment and product testing with suppliers are typically part of the evaluation.
