Piston vs. Overflow Filling

How each technology works

An overflow filler pumps product into the container until it reaches a set level, with excess returning to the supply tank. A piston filler draws a fixed volume into a cylinder and displaces it into the container.

Product fit

Overflow fillers suit water-thin to medium-viscosity liquids, including foamy products. Piston fillers handle medium to very viscous products and can accommodate particulates with appropriate valves.

Accuracy and appearance

Overflow filling produces a consistent visual fill level, ideal for clear bottles on retail shelves. Piston filling delivers consistent volume regardless of container variance, which matters when product is sold by volume or weight.

Speed and changeover

Both scale with additional heads. Overflow fillers typically change over faster for thin products; piston fillers may require cylinder changes across very different fill volumes.

Decision checklist

  1. Is the product thicker than a light syrup? Consider piston.
  2. Is the container clear and level appearance important? Consider overflow.
  3. Are there particulates? Piston.
  4. Does the product foam? Overflow.
